I grew up in Stevens Point Wisconsin, where I developed an early interest in the natural world. I carried salamanders in my pockets and named earthworms. Birds in particular captured my attention. I happily received binoculars and a field guide for my seventh birthday, preparing to one day start a career as an ornithologist. My interests changed in High School, not away from birds, science, and ecology, but away from science careers. I studied art at Lawrence University in Appleton, WI and received an undergraduate degree in 2004. The following year, I student taught and finished requirements for a k-12 art education license. In the summer of 2005, bat biologist, Professor Jodi Sedlock included me in an Asia Freeman Grant. I traveled to the Philippines to join Professor Sedlock and another artist in the field. Along with fieldwork, we created illustrations for educational materials about bats for community centers in the Philippines. I attended graduate school at the University of Minnesota from 2006 through 2009. Along with art courses and art making, I volunteered at the St. Paul Raptor Center, and took an ornithology course with Professor Robert Zink. Intrigued by some of the information from ornighology class, I started reading more about bird migration. In the spring of 2008, I received a Graduate Research Partnership Program Grant with Professor Christine Baeumler. As part of this grant, I traveled to the Peruvian Amazon to see, experience, and learn about a place where some of Minnesota‚Äôs migratory birds spend their winter. This trip informed my thesis work and continues to be a source of ideas for current work. In 2010, I received a Minnesota State Arts Board grant. This grant included going to different sites in Minnesota and in Costa Rica to gather imagery and information to further my series on bird migration. In addition to my studio practice, I teach art at Roseville Area High School, and spend time with my wonderful husband, and our dog, and create hand printed tea towels for my etsy store, crankosauruspress (
